Choosing the correct packaging for your device

In this guide, we will explore the options for packaging your device.

Packaging your device correctly for its journey to us is vital. In other words, correct packaging will help your device get to us safely and securely and make sure that no further damage occurs to it.

For instance, a rattling hard drive in a loosely packed box will only damage the drive more. Ultimately, this could lead to a point where your data is lost forever. Therefore, the better packaging your device has, the better the chance it gets to us intact with no more damage than it had before you sent it to us.

So, follow this guide to make sure you get your device to us correctly.

We recommend these packaging items for your device:

Cardboard Box with lid
A Small or Medium Cardboard Box

The first and most important packaging item is a box. A suitably sized container for your device is key. Enough room will need to be left to safely pad the device with bubble wrap.
A box that has its own lid is best, just for added security.

Secondly, it is incredibly important that your device is as protected as possible. Therefore, by wrapping your device in bubble wrap, you can limit further damage that could occur during delivery.
Air pouches can be used, however, they provide less security than a bubble wrapped device.

Finally, an anti-static bag will keep your device safe from electrical damage. This is caused by static electricity in the air or static-prone surfaces.
So, to limit the risk of any further damage to your device, an anti-static bag along with bubble wrap is the safest way to go.

How to safely place your device in the packaging:

  1. Carefully place your drive into an anti-static bag, if possible.
    • This is not required, however, there is a risk of electrical damage during delivery.
  2. Wrap the drive in bubble wrap.
    • This needs to be tight enough so the device is secure, but not too tight that it’s putting pressure on to the device.
  3. Place the drive into a small or medium box, whichever size is best.
    • If possible, secure the lid and use tape, if appropriate.
  4. Make sure the drive is tightly compact so that it is unlikely to become damaged in transit.
    • For example, the device should not be able to rattle around in the box.
